When a weekend warrior attacks a wood flooring project for their home there are some basic concepts that should be understood regardless of the type of wood floor you are installing. First of all you need to determine the type of floor you are going to use in your project. This could be limited by the type of subfloor, the height limitations and whether you are above or below grade. Once you determine the type of floor you plan on using you can then decide if you plan on installing the flooring unfinished or prefinished.

One of the choices necessary to make when deciding on your new floor will be whether or not you wish to purchase an exotic or domestic species of wood for your floors. Exotic woods are usually more dense thus harder when compared to most domestic woods. There are however a number of things to consider in this choice. Will your stair treads if you have them look favorable in another species than the floor as most treads are traditionally made from oak. This is definitely something to consider.
